A Week of Woodland Themed Events and Activities in Lochinver

Writing Place – Saturday 6th, 10am – 4pm, £10 donation, lunch included
Morning workshop: ‘Coming Home to Here’ with Margot Henderson at Assynt Leisure Centre, a chance to use writing as a practice of mindfulness, a way of coming home to ourselves and our sense of place, to the world within us & the world around us.
Afternoon workshop: ‘Words, Wood and Water’ with Mandy Haggith, a writing walk through Culag Woods to the White Shore beach, discover how you can use the natural environment as creative inspiration. To book contact Philippa Johnston on philippajohnston@btinternet.com or 01337 842513.

Exhibition of sculpture by Paul Szeiler –
Sunday 7th – Sunday 21st, 1-6pm daily, Assynt Ceramics Workshop
Ceramics sculpture of the wild animals past and present found in the far north. For more information call 01571 844022.

Quinag - Taking Root – Monday 8th, 10am – 1pm, free
A quided walk on the south side of Quinag to see the trees there and find out about management plans for the area. Meet at the car park by Loch Assynt (NC202262). It’s not a long walk but is over rough ground, please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for a day out on the hill.

Bowl Carving – Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th
(2 day course), 10am – 4pm, £50
Join local green woodworker Chris Goodman at Glencanisp to learn the techniques for carving out a wooden bowl using traditional wood-working tools and take home your very own bowl. Booking essential, contact Chris on christophergoodman@hotmail.com or 07799 427296.

Fungi Foray – Tuesday 9th, 11am – 2pm
Fungi in Culag Woods, explore the marvellous world of fungi in one of the best woods for fungi in Sutherland. Meet at Woodside Car Park, Culag Woods. Ad 3.00, conc. £2.00, family £8.00. Contact Andy or Roz Summers on andy.summers@highland.gov.uk or 01571 844654

Tree Nursery Volunteer Day – Thursday 11th, 10am – 3pm, free
See how we collect tree seeds and prepare them for growing, join in with nursery tasks & visit the Gaelic Tree Alphabet path at the Little Assynt tree nursery to help look after our trees. Music Night at The Caberfeidh – Thursday 11th, 9pm til late
The weekly traditional music session with a variety of wooden instruments, musicians welcome.

Spoon Carving – Friday 12th, 10am – 4pm, £25
Come and carve your very own spoon at Glencanisp with local green woodworker Chris Goodman using traditional hand tools. Booking essential, contact Chris on 07799 427296 or christophergoodman@hotmail.com .

Lochinver Market – Friday 12th, 10am – 4pm,
Lochinver Village Hall
A chance to buy local crafts including woodland crafts and homemade preserves from fruit trees.

THE WOODLAND FESTIVAL
Sat 13th September, 2pm til late, Glencanisp

An afternoon of demonstrations, workshops, activities and displays celebrating wood & woodland produce with food & music too.

• 2-3pm - Loading and lighting the charcoal kiln
• 2-6pm - lots to see and do in the pole barn including:
o Pressing apples (bring your own and taste your very own apple juice)
o Dying wool using tree bark
o Basket weaving demonstration
o Have a go at weaving a willow hurdle
o A chance to have a go at using some traditional green woodworking tools
o Activities and games for kids
o Puppet show
o Crafts and produce from the Romania exchange trip to see and sample
o Culag Woods stall
o Coigach – Assynt Living Landscape Partnership – find out more and comment on plans for woodland expansion, forests & orchards in the area.
• 2-6pm – Exhibition of Sculpture by Paul Szeiler in the Old Stables Studio
• 2-6pm – display and sale of woodland arts, crafts and produce in the Arts Studio
• 3pm – Story telling walk with Greg Dawson Allen
• 4:30pm – The Folklore of Trees and Poetry with Mandy Haggith
• 6:30pm – Hand fasting ceremony – come and renew your vows!
• 7pm – Music with Holly Lockie
• 7:30pm – shutting down the charcoal kiln
• 8pm – Bonfire and open music session – all welcome! BYOB!!!

Teas, coffees & cakes available in the afternoon and hot food from 6-8pm.
Wild camping available by the loch a short walk past Glencanisp Lodge.

Most activities undercover but wear appropriate footwear & clothing for walking around the woods & being outdoors.
