It’s more than 50 years since Michael Bond created Paddington, the little bear who brings his impeccable manners and love for marmalade sandwiches from darkest Peru to London. And the nation’s favourite bear is in safe hands in this warm and witty charmer of a film, which beautifully combines computer generated animation with live action.

The story is the familiar one: a little bear lives blissfully in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo, until an earthquake forces our hero to head alone for London – the city he’s only heard of, but where he is sure that the kindness of strangers will soon see him in a loving new home. But when our hero does eventually rock up at Paddington station he is met only with icy commuters, too wrapped up in themselves to take notice of a talking bear. Soon though, the little bear meets the passing Brown family. Mrs Brown offers him a bed for the night, and gives him his new name.

There’s lots of fun to follow, and precision-timed slapstick sequences, some of which involve Nicole Kidman as the wicked taxidermist who has seduced the Brown’s neighbour, Mr Curry (a brilliant Peter Capaldi), to help her steal and stuff the little bear.

And look out for the cameo appearance of Michael Bond, raising a toast to his creation. “Please look after this bear’? – that’s exactly what Paul King and the cast have done.

“A bear hug of a family treat” The Observer
“Paddington is the real deal.” The Herald
