Glencanisp and Drumrunie Estates

In June 2005 the people of Assynt once again seized a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy the Glencanisp and Drumrunie estates in Assynt. The two estates, formerly owned by the Vestey family, covering 44,594 acres includes the spectacular mountains of Suilven, Canisp, Cul Mor and Cul Beag and the beautiful Assynt, Veyatie and Cam lochs. The Assynt Foundation’s purchase of the two estates was the first to use the new “right to buy” legislation brought in by the Scottish Parliament under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. At the ceremony to mark the conclusion of the community purchase, the local directors of the Foundation said “as custodians of this land we aim to create local employment and safeguard our natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of the community and future generations, and for the enjoyment of the wider public”. The community purchase also included Glencanisp Lodge. The two estates were bought with funding from the Scottish Land Fund, the Community Land Unit of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Natural Heritage, the John Muir Trust, the Tubney Charitable Trust based in Oxford, and private donations.
